Programme
Since parachuting is a weather dependent activity the programme has been formulate to take this into account. The programme has been designed to run for 4 days during a 5 day period. ie the course dates will be mon -fri but the training will only occupy 4 of those days. If all goes well and days Mon - Thur see the course completed then there will be further opportunities to conduct additional parachute descents on the Fri should you wish, or you will naturally be free to leave for home early. However, weather being what it is means that we may have a day mid course kicking our heals while we await the suitable conditions. This will in itself induce stress and the dynamics of the group will surely throw up some interesting debrief points.
Outline
- One day of survival theory, classroom and practical elements
- One day parachuting theory in accordance with British Parachuting Association regulations
- Conduct parachuting refresher training immediately prior to first descent into survival assessment (to be not less than 30 hours)
- Having an assessment phase means that the course is level 3, successful completion to the satisfactory standard being a pre-requisite to attending the level 4 advanced course.
The parachute jump will be a Static line, meaning you will exit the aircraft at approximately 3500 feet up and your parachute will automatically deploy. However, you will then need to carry out the drills and training conducted during the theory day to navigate and fly to the Parachute Landing Area, just like hundreds of people have before you, except you will be aware that upon landing you will not be able to relax and enjoy the experince of the jump as you will then be having to carryout literally life saving survival skills in order to see the night out. After all you will not have the usual Bergen full of equipment, just the bare minimum! Basically what you had on you and an old parachute to utilise...
Course Overview
Mountaineering, skiing, sailing, aircraft crashes etc all of these dangerous and potentially survival situation inducing activities are the cause of high stress which, if not correctly dealt with impacts upon our survival chances. Immediately prior to the impact stage of the survival situation we need to be able to rationally understand what is happening and what we must do to get the favorable outcome we desire.
So is born the Trueways Survival ‘High Stress’ Course. In order to better train you to deal with this stress we intend to give you a burst of high-stress as part of the survival course. This will effectively become a ‘stress-inoculation’, meaning that you will be better able to deal with such stress levels again because you will be better prepared to come to terms with it. Therefore, your reactions will draw on the cognitive parts of the brain and not the often irrational, emotional side.
The safe way for us to induce similar levels of stress is for you to conduct a parachute jump immediately before the assessed phase of the course where you will have to demonstrate that you can correctly prioritise your actions and carry them out to the appropriate standards to save your life, before maintaining your life conducting your survival skills. Fantastic course. Your instructors have great rapport with the group and were dynamic in their teaching. They paced the days very well and I could definitely not absorb any more knowledge. Although only 3 days, the experience was epic. Huge highs followed devastating lows. A great adventure.

I just wanted to say thank you for a great course, Chalky made it both entertaining and jammed packed with high quality information, every question, no matter how daft was answered with a truthful answer, i left a tired but very happy person, once again another quality course from Trueways, I’m consolidating the new skills I’ve learn’t and am looking forward to booking a seven day course.
Peter Newell, London
Hi Trueways, Attended the 7-day advanced survival course, the typical British weather didn't disappoint, testing the shelters we built to the limit. Learnt a surprising amount in such a short period of time and gave me the confidence to tackle the wilderness myself. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our course instructors who made the weekend very enjoyable. I'll be sure to return on another extended course and may bring a few friends along with me.
